Description

In a form of a five-pointed American star, this monument was designed by the architect Georges DEDOYARD, to honor the memory of the 76 890 American Soldiers, killed, wounded or missing in the Battle of the Bulge. A circular gallery with columns gives this monument the look of an immense temple, apprimately 12 meters in height and a centra atrium with a 10 meters radius. A commemorative plaque has been placed at the heart of the memorial with the following inscription : "Populus Belgicus Memor. 4. VII. MCMXLVI Liberatoribus Americanis". on the gallery walls is a description of the Battle of the Bulge and a list of the names of the main squadrons who participate in the action. On the crown of the memorial, the names of the 50 States figure in bronze letters. At the foot of the Memorial, a crypt dug in the rock and decorated with mosaics by the French artist Fernand Leger houses three chapels, Roman Catholic, Protestant and Jewish.; to allow American families to come together to remember their dead.
